South Florida's Ryan Hunter-Reay has front row seat at Indy 500

The South Florida kid hasn't changed.

Memorial Day Weekends during his teenage years found Ryan Hunter-Reay buzzing his Boca neighborhood in a go-kart or fishing on the ocean with some pals. And, of course, watching his beloved Indianapolis 500 on TV.

The Fort Lauderdale resident still gets out on the boat with the same friends every chance he gets. The big difference now: On Sunday, he will be in the No. 28 car starting on the front row of the Indy 500.

"It's been a lifelong dream of mine," Hunter-Reay, 31, said this week during a break in preparation. "Every time I sat in the go-kart, I always pretended I was an IndyCar driver, like that's what I would be one day. It was a long road getting here, a lot of work, a lot of sacrifice. I feel like the luckiest guy because I've got the best job that I could ever dream of."

The dream of winning the most famous auto race has never been more within reach for the Cardinal Gibbons graduate with the third-fastest qualifying speed of 226.240 mph, a tick behind pole-sitter Ryan Brisco. Hunter-Reay, with three career wins in IndyCar events, is off to his best season start ? currently fourth in the points standings and coming off a second-place finish in Brazil.

Impressive enough that former neighbors at the Timbers of Boca, who banned his go-kart from their streets, might forgive his youthful transgressions?

"I'm sure some of them won't forgive me, but, yeah, most will," he said with a laugh.

It is a 180-degree turnabout from last year when he was bumped from the race on the last day of qualifying, and Andretti Autosport owner Michael Andretti had to buy a qualified car from another team to get him in the race. He refers to the humbling experience as "a real kick in the pants for all of us."

Sucking turbulent air from a full field of IndyCars is like looking ahead on I-95 and seeing nothing but red tail lights. Roaring down the home straight at the famed Brickyard with nothing but pavement ahead is every racer's dream.

Yet, Hunter-Reay is only too aware of the fine line between the flip sides of racing fortune. The reminder is on the side of the helmet he will wear Sunday bearing the photo of last year's Indy winner Dan Wheldon celebrating his achievement. Wheldon, a close friend who was to be a teammate this year, was killed in the final race of the 2011 season at Las Vegas.

In addition to honoring Wheldon's memory, the helmet was auctioned Thursday with the proceeds going to Racing For Cancer, the charity Hunter-Reay co-founded after his mother died of colon cancer in 2009.

"Every driver out here knows IndyCar racing is extremely dangerous. Our heads are exposed in these cars and we're doing 230 miles an hour," he said. "Things can go very bad very fast here."

Since finishing sixth and being named the race's Rookie of the Year in 2008, things have mostly gone bad for Hunter-Reay at Indy until this year's qualifying. Most harrowing was the crash near the end of the 2010 race when his car ran out of fuel and Mike Conway's car hit him from behind, striking a glancing blow to the back of his helmet as it vaulted over and into the wall.

None of that has dampened his enthusiasm for Indy, which he refers to as "our Super Bowl." The atmosphere is unique, from the more than 400,000 spectators to the challenge of the track's long straightaways and tight, narrow turns.

"Indianapolis is just so challenging because we're entering the corners at 233 miles an hour and there's very little banking, and the car is sliding all the way to the corner and you're almost doing a controlled slide at 230 miles an hour through the corner," Hunter-Reay said.

"In these cars, with the G forces we have we hold our breath a lot because you can't breathe normally with 4 ? G's pressing on your body."

To prepare for that, Hunter-Reay calls on his background in South Florida. No, not by driving in rush-hour traffic, but rather by free-diving on the offshore reefs from his 36-foot boat.

"Free-diving has put me in better cardiovascular shape for sure," he said, explaining that he strives for duration rather than depth. "It really comes down to bottom time: not using much energy and getting to the bottom and staying down there and sitting on the reef and staking the fish. I find that to be really enjoyable."

It is all part of why Hunter-Reay hasn't strayed from his roots despite his job taking him all over the world. He and wife Beccy live with their two dogs next to the Intracoastal Waterway.

They are featured in an episode of "Fish Tank Kings," which debuts today at 10 p.m. on the Nat Geo Wild channel. It will show the construction of a custom 150-gallon saltwater aquarium in their home by Living Color, the Fort Lauderdale company that built the fish tanks at Marlins Park.

"Getting back home and getting out on the boat and doing some fishing and diving that's my perfect getaway," he said.

(AP) ? The memory of missing the playoffs for first time since 1996 and the ghost of an 18-year-old wound were wiped out with a sweep of rookie Adam Henrique's stick.

The New Jersey Devils are going back to the Stanley Cup finals, thanks to Henrique, a 40-year-old goaltender and a coach who'd never been to the postseason in the NHL.

How's that for a turnaround?

Henrique scored off a wild scramble in front at 1:03 into overtime and the Devils defeated the rival New York Rangers, 3-2, in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals to advance to their first Stanley Cup finals since 2003.

"It means a lot," Devils leading scorer Ilya Kovalchuk said minutes after reaching the Cup finals for the first time. "It's a great feeling. Last year was a tough one, but this year was totally different. We played well all year. The first round of the playoffs was a little tough but after that, I think we figured out our game and what it takes to win."

After beating Florida, Philadelphia and their biggest rivals, the Rangers, only the Los Angeles Kings stand in the way of a fourth Cup for New Jersey.

The title round begins here Wednesday.

This series win came against the Devils' most intense rival, and it was that much sweeter.

"That one was like Christmas," said Henrique, who also scored the series winner in overtime as Devils' first-round, Game 7 win over the Panthers.

It also was needed. The Devils blew a 2-0 first-period lead and didn't want to head back to New York for a Game 7 on Sunday.

"It didn't matter how it got to overtime, we were in a good position," Devils captain Zach Parise said. "We were at home. We just needed one shot."

Actually, the Devils needed four shots to win the game.

Henrique's winner came after Henrik Lundqvist stopped Kovalchuk twice and Alexei Ponikarovsky. The last shot lay in the crease and Henrique tapped it home.

"We caught them on a line change and their defensemen were tired," said Devils coach Peter DeBoer, who was fired by Florida after missing the playoffs in his three seasons. "We found a way to jam one in. That's the only way you're going to score on Lundqvist. You're not going to get a clean one. You're going to have to work for it around the net.

"And that's what we did."

Ryan Carter and Kovalchuk also scored for the Devils, whose biggest move this year was hiring DeBoer. He has more than proved his coaching ability.

Ruslan Fedotenko and Ryan Callahan tallied for top-seeded New York, which had a good flurry just before New Jersey scored to end it.

Henrique, who is nominated for the Calder Trophy ? given to the NHL's top rookie ? skated away from the crease and jumped against the end boards in the corner as his teammates hopped off the bench and mobbed him.

The six Rangers on the ice just stayed down in disbelief and frustration. This was very much like Game 5, which the Devils won 5-3. New York carried the play after the first period and had a 35-29 edge in shots.

But when it came time for a game-deciding play to be made, it was a Devil who made it.

"When they scored, it was such an empty feeling," said Lundqvist, who said the puck took a weird bounce on the final play. "It is shocking."

Henrique overcame injury to score this one. He seemed to take a stick from Brian Boyle in the groin area late in the third and had to leave the ice.

He felt no pain after the game winner.

All the Rangers could do was bow their heads and then line up for the traditional handshake after losing to their cross-rival rivals in a series that was close.

"That's playoff hockey, and that's usually where you get an overtime goal," Rangers veteran Brandon Prust said. "Just whacking away in front of the net, getting rebounds."

Martin Brodeur, 40, kept the Devils alive in the third. He stopped a power-play shot by Brad Richards, made a save on Artem Anisimov between the circles and used his stick to deflect a pass from the boards by Carl Hagelin in the final minute just before it got to Marian Gaborik on the edge of the crease.

"You could tell he was in the zone. He led us," Parise said. "He made some big saves tonight."

Lundqvist's best stop in the third was on Dainius Zubrus on a shot from behind the circles.

Facing elimination and down 2-0 after 20 minutes, the Rangers found their game in the second period and tied the game at 2-all on goals by Fedotenko and Callahan in a roughly four-minute span.

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who assisted on both goals, made the big play to get New York back in the game. He collected the puck above the left circle, skated around the net and tried a wrap around. The shot didn't go on goal but it turned out to be a perfect pass to Fedotenko who a tap-in into an open net at 9:47.

Callahan, who had a New York goal go off his leg in the Devils' 5-3 win on Wednesday, tied the game at 13:41 when Dan Girardi's shot from the right point deflected off his leg into the open lower corner of the net. Callahan's sixth of the postseason was set up when Brandon Dubinsky won a faceoff in the left circle.

Carter, who scored the game winner in New York on Wednesday night after the Devils blew a 3-0 lead, put New Jersey ahead again at 10:05 of the opening period.

The play started with a bad pinch at the point by Rangers defenseman Marc Staal. Steve Bernier led a 3-on-1 and found Stephen Gionta coming down the middle for a solo chance against Lundqvist. The Rangers goaltender stopped the shot, but Carter swatted the rebound home for his fourth of the playoffs.

Kovalchuk's seventh goal of the postseason and fifth on the power play was a thing of beauty. All five Devils skaters touched the puck with tape-to-tape passes with Zubrus finding Kovalchuk alone low in the left circle for a shot that Lundqvist had little chance to stop.

The Devils ? as is the tradition for many Cup finalists ? did not touch the Prince of Wales Trophy that was presented at center ice. As the team skated off to their locker room, "Glory Days," the 1984 hit from New Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen serenaded them.

The game was played on the 18-year anniversary of the Rangers' dramatic, 4-2, Game 6 victory over New Jersey at the Meadowlands, a victory that pushed that classic Eastern Conference final series to a Game 7 and eventually led New York to its first Stanley Cup in 54 years. That game, of course, was preceded by a guarantee from Rangers captain Mark Messier, who delivered three goals en route to the victory.

This time, though, there will be no Game 7.

NOTES: The Empire State Building's tower lights were lit in red and blue on Friday to cheer on the Rangers. ... Mogul and TV personality Donald Trump was at the game. ... Devils C Travis Zajac left the ice briefly in the second after being slashed on the left hand by Prust. No penalty was called. ... New Jersey is 4-1 in overtime in the postseason. New York finished 2-3 after regulation. ... This is only the second time the Devils have defeated the Rangers in the postseason in six tries. ... The last time New Jersey played in the Stanley Cup finals, the Devils also played a California team: the Anaheim Ducks in 2003.

Is Every Employee Responsible For Customer Service? | The Social ...

Becky Carroll, author of "The Hidden Power of Your Customers", posted this on Twitter today:

I agree wholeheartedly. We are all in the business of service. It doesn?t matter who you are or what your position is. Even if you have an information technology degree and work by yourself in a corner cubicle, you eventually have to deal with other people. You could be taking CFA prep classes and work from home. It doesn?t matter because what you will be doing is offering some type of service. This means that you will be interacting with people at one point or another - whether it?s on the phone, via email, or through social networking.

I?ve always said that there should be more customer service classes taught in universities or it should be mandatory that students take a psychology class. In many business classes we are often taught about business being a numbers game and how to market a business, but we are never thought about the human side of business, like how to make that personal connection. I believe that when you see people for who they are versus being just another customers, that?s when a business can truly be successful.

When I was a manager for a national retail chain, I remember constantly stressing over our sales goals. I was also bombarded with projects, making sure my sales people were following the company?s ?10 steps to customer service?, and all those other managerial responsibilities. Despite all of these duties, I still went above and beyond the call of duty and never used the ?It?s not in my job description? excuse to get out of doing something. I wanted the business to be successful and I wanted the sales people to have the support so that they could have fun at work and be successful too.

Forget about what your ?job description? says. Remain open to the opportunities to help in any way that you can - whether it?s being of service to a fellow co-worker or helping a customer solve a problem or find the answer to a question. Even if you can?t help a customer directly, you could be a guide to helping them discover the resolution or answer. So when it?s time for you to get some help, then it will be someone else?s turn to return the favor.

Should it be the responsibility of every employee to take care of customers in some way? What do you think?

76ers Top Celtics To Force Game 7: Jrue Holiday, Elton Brand Lead Philadelphia To 82-75 Win

PHILADELPHIA ? Jrue Holiday scored 20 points, and Elton Brand had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the tough-and-determined Philadelphia 76ers past the Celtics, 82-75 on Wednesday night to send the Eastern Conference semifinals back to Boston for Game 7.

No team has won consecutive games in a series where neither team has played well enough to seize control.

Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo could be playing their last game together Saturday night if they can't find a way to hang onto the ball and put away a Sixers team that won't quit.

Former 76ers All-Star Allen Iverson earned a roaring standing ovation when he presented the game ball. By the end, the fans were on their feet for Holiday, Brand and Andre Iguodala for keeping the eighth-seeded Sixers alive for at least one more game.

The Celtics posted ugly numbers across the board: Blame the loss on the 33 percent shooting, the 17 turnovers or the 3 for 14 3-point shooting. Either way, there's enough to go around.

Pierce had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Garnett had 20 points and 11 boards.

The Sixers again failed to put up the sparkling numbers in the box score usually required for a deep postseason run. They missed 8 of 9 3-pointers, shot a woeful 17 of 28 from the free throw line and had 12 turnovers.

But when the Sixers really needed that game-changing basket, there was Evan Turner twisting and fighting through defenders down the lane. When the Sixers needed a stop, there was Brand, ripping a rebound away from Boston, even with painful neck and shoulder injuries that keep him awake at night.

The Sixers wrote "Huddle Up and Fight" on their locker room chalkboard.

They did just that and are now one win away from reaching the conference finals for the first time since 2001.

Iverson was the MVP of that run.

Maybe a little of that ol' A.I. magic rubbed off in Game 6.

Unlike Game 5, when the Sixers collapsed in the third quarter and blew a lead, they suddenly found a groove in front of 20,403 fans.

The Sixers started hitting free throws, kept turnovers to a minimum (two), and fed the ball to a starting lineup that had been largely outproduced by a fantastic bench.

Turner was fouled on a go-ahead layup but missed from the line. That made the Sixers 5 of 13 while the Celtics were 14 for 14.

Iguodala split two defenders and threw down a ferocious dunk over Pierce to draw the foul. He made his first free throw after missing his first four and the Sixers led by five.

Pierce led the parade to the line for the Boston. He made his first 11 attempts for a Celtics team that was 17 for 17 through three quarters. The Celtics made only 19 field goals through three.

The Sixers also couldn't find their way from the 3-point line and missed their first six attempts until Iguodala nailed one for a 58-52 lead.

Garnett caught some heat after calling Philly fans "fair weather" after Game 5 in Boston.

Well, the forecast called for thunderous cheers after Iguodala buried his 3.

That helped the Sixers take a 60-56 lead into the fourth and put them 12 minutes away from Game 7.

This time, the Sixers weren't blowing a lead.

Turner, who never met a clutch attempt he didn't like, went right-to-left on a drive down the lane for a nine-point lead. The 6-foot-4 Holiday brushed off the 4-inch difference and went high over Garnett for a one-handed bucket and an 11-point lead.

While the Sixers swapped shot makers on almost every possession, the Celtics never found that third and fourth option behind Pierce and Garnett.

Rajon Rondo had tortured the Sixers over the first five games, but was limited to nine points (4 for 14 shooting) and six assists.

Iguodala and Turner scored 12 points. Lou Williams had 11.

Coach Doug Collins had the Sixers watch a highlight video from Game 7 of the 1982 Eastern Conference finals on Tuesday. The Sixers blew a 3-1 lead in that series and were forced to win Game 7 at Boston to reach the finals ? which they did.

Thirty years later, the Sixers get to try again.

Notes: Iverson cupped his hand to his ear and received the loudest ovation of the night. He watched the game from a suite and his eyes watered up when he was shown later in the game on the big screen as the crowd, thousands wearing a No. 3 jersey, went wild and chanted, "MVP!" ... Celtics assistant coach Tyronn Lue was famously stepped over by Iverson in the 2001 NBA finals. ... Celtics G Avery Bradley (shoulder) sat out. Coach Doc Rivers said Bradley and Ray Allen are both considered day to day. ... Collins was stunned Iguodala was left off the NBA's all-defensive squad. Collins said Iguodala should have been "no worse than a second-team defender." ... Mickael Pietrus hit the only 3 of the half for either team at the buzzer to send the Celtics into the break ahead 36-33.
